The nucleus is made up of protons and neutrons, very densely packed together. Hydrogen is the lightest element, has one proton, the heaviest element, uranium has 92 protons. The nucleus of an atom are held together with great force, the "strongest" force in nature." When bombarded with a neutron, it can be split apart , this is called fission. Fission basically means when one atom splits into two and releases energy. Nuclear fission happens naturally everyday. (1)
A uranuim atom is hit with a neutron splitting it open and releasing energy. This energy heats water into steam which turns a turbine. This turbine generates electricity. (Mrs. Crane)
